PIR Motion Sensor Light Bulbs: How They Work

These motion-activated light bulbs employ a light sensor that compares the ambient light level (measured in LUX) to a predetermined default value. If the ambient light is brighter than the sensor's LUX threshold, the bulb will remain off. However, if the environment is darker, the motion detection function will activate, automatically turning the light on when movement is sensed, and then switching it off after 30 seconds if no additional motion is detected.

For instance, during the daytime, the motion sensor bulb will stay off, only engaging when the surroundings become dark enough to trigger the motion detection. These bulbs are designed to be a direct replacement for standard E26 A19 bulbs, easily fitting into existing light fixtures.

The PIR (Passive Infrared) motion sensor can cover a larger area and detect movements reliably and precisely. The detection range can be adjusted by changing the mounting height of the bulb, with optimal performance achieved at 10-13 feet. The sensor detects sudden temperature changes in objects, so it should be positioned away from other heat sources like lights, HVAC, appliances, etc. to function properly.

This automatic on/off capability not only saves energy but also extends the bulb's lifespan. Installing motion-sensor lights in areas of potential access, such as entryways, can act as an effective deterrent against burglars, enhancing home security.
